How to commission a painting
The things to think about when commissioning a painting are as follows:

  • Who and what is to be in the portrait. This could be a family portrait, it could include pets, or it could be a simple portrait of one person. I am also happy to paint a favourite place or landscape.
  • How big you would like it to be. Don’t forget to include about 4in or 10cm all round for the frame if you are measuring a space, but please be aware that artists normally talk about the canvas size when quoting.
  • Which medium you would prefer; oil, pencil, or watercolour.
  • When the work needs to be finished. Often there is a special date such as an anniversary, birthday or retirement.
  • The approximate budget . My paintings start at £200 for a small pencil drawing or watercolour, and rise to £750 for an A2 size oil painting (excluding postage and packing).
Other considerations would include where the sittings will take place and, eventually, what clothes should be worn. I prefer if possible to work from life to start with, creating a sketch on canvas, which I will build on later  working from photos on the computer. It is best if I can take the photos, but where the distance is too great, I can work entirely from good quality images uploaded to my computer (not taken with a phone please).
Once you have decided to go ahead with your choice of painting, I will require a non- refundable deposit (usually £25% of the final price), which covers materials and my time. I don’t send pictures of the work as it progresses, but as it nears completion I will send you a copy by email. This gives you the chance to let me know if there are any small adjustments you would like me to make. I can guarantee that the painting will be of the same quality and similar style to those displayed on my website.

As the artist, I reserve all copyright and reproduction rights.

Rosemary has taught our daughter Gemma piano for the past three years and her personal relationship with Gemma shines through in the picture. She has captured her perfectly as she is in that moment of concentration where she focuses on a task in the midst of her usual energetic whirlwind approach to life. The likeness is outstanding, but it is more than that, the essence of Gemma as we see her every day is right there. We are absolutely thrilled with the portrait and will treasure it always. Charlotte Phillips
Thank you Rosemary for the brilliant watercolour of Ben. Ali will be over the moon! Mrs. R.A. Brown
Stunning , gave my wife the first picture instead of waiting for xmas , she literally broke down and cried, you captured everything, thank you James Hankin
We lost our loyal Black Labrador of 16 years recently and we were heartbroken. I wanted to get a unique anniversary present for my husband and began to search for a local artist who could paint a portrait of Oliver. Rosemary managed to capture every element of our boy and it is a true likeness to him. Thank you for doing an amazing portrait. The Goodmans
We commissioned Rosemary to paint a life size picture of Rafa Nadal on our son’s bedroom wall. It is fantastic and now she adds small portraits of his family to the crowd. A truly bespoke piece of work that continuously brings pleasure, what can’t Rosemary do?!! Caron Sandhu
I must let you know how pleased we all are with the lovely watercolour. Your talent has successfully captured a true likeness of each individual in a simple, classic form – giving exactly the effect we were hoping for. It’s lovely to have such a long lasting reminder of happy family times. Thank you for making the whole experience so worthwhile. Betty Anderson
